Floyd Garven’s Obituary

Floyd Garven, age 74 of Gurnee, died December 17, 1996 at Lake Forest Hospital. He was born March 2, 1922 in Baker, MN. Mr. Garven was a member of the Gurnee Community Church where he was also in the choir. He was a Veteran of WW II, having served as an Ensign with the U.S. Navy from 1943-45 and was also a Flight Instructor and Pilot.

He received his B.S. Degree from Moorhead State University in 1946 where he was captain of the football team and also lettered in baseball and basketball. He received his M.S. Degree from North Dakota State University in 1948.

Mr. Garven was active in many community affairs including the Boy Scouts, past President of the Gurnee School Board in which during that time planning was completed for the construction of Viking School. He was past president of the Gurnee PTA. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Society for Quality Control and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association-Quality Control Section.

Mr. Garven retired from Abbott Labs in 1984 as Director of Quality Assurance after 35 years of employment. During his tenure at Abbott, he had held various positions including Mgr. Development, 1956-1964, Director of Development, 1964-1966, Product Assurance Executive, 1966-1967 and then became Director of Quality Assurance from 1967 until he retired.

Mr. Garven is survived by 3 sons; Paul Garven of Gurnee, IL, James (Jan) Garven, Austin, TX, and John (Pam) Garven of Huntley, IL, 6 grandchildren, 2 brothers, Lawrence Garven of San Francisco, CA., and George Garven of Las Vegas, NV, and 2 sisters, Bernice Law of Wimbledon, ND, and Norma Clark of Anoka, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julanne on March 29, 1996, his father George in 1956 and his mother Romaine in 1971.

Memorial services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Friday, December 20, 1996 at Gurnee Community Church, 4555 W. Grand Avenue, Gurnee with the Rev. William Genda officiating. Interment will be private at Warren Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 P.M. only at the MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF GURNEE. Memorials may be made in his memory to Gurnee Community Church or the Mayo Foundation for Education & Research, c/o Development Dept., 200 1st Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905.
